The most exciting events I've witnessed from my apartment, ranked

I live in Riverdale in the Bronx, and have for 18 years. It’s a relatively quiet neighborhood where not much happens, since we are so far north of the hustle and bustle of Manhattan or the more lively parts of the Bronx.

That’s why when something happens, you notice! And in my case, I write it down.

We just had an earthquake in the northeast that was a 4.8 magnitude in NYC, so this easily makes the list of notable things to happen. And since I have a list, I might as well share it.

Without further ado, I present to you a completely comprehensive list of exciting things that I’ve witnessed from my apartment, in ascending order of excitement:

  • The time Hurricane Sandy hit NYC and we didn’t lose power, but we saw a barrel roll down the hill

  • Many, many fireworks shooting off during the first year of the pandemic

  • The time our cat Cersei busted out of a window onto the fire escape and emerged in our old apartment that she’d never been in before

  • The time a couple loudly broke up during a massive rainstorm at 2 in the morning, with the man yelling “you’re ruining my life!”

  • Today’s earthquake

  • The time water started pouring from the light fixture in a closet because someone two floors up left their sink on, causing $13k worth of damage

  • The time a van crashed into our building and the main entrance awning collapsed

  • The time the school across the street exploded from a gas leak

If this is a boring neighborhood in the city, I can only imagine what happens in an exciting one! Here’s to the next 18 years here in quiet, boring Riverdale.
