Overview of WNBA Ratings

Welcome to my WNBA ratings page, updated daily (as best as I can)!

My rating system uses only three variables to rank WNBA teams: who each team played, the final margin of each contest, and how long ago each game was. The model heavily weights recent results and it down-weights and eventually forgets about older results. Ratings are calculated using daily data starting with the inaugural 1997 WNBA season.

The scale of results is relative - the difference between two teams is the square root of a predicted scoring result between the two. In practical terms, a rating of +1 indicates a team that is playing like a title contender, a rating of +2 indicates a team that’s playing like historical champions, and a rating of +3 indicates a team that is playing as well as any team has in WNBA history and could end up as the GOAT.
