A Powerful Reminder
I was cleaning up my desk at work and, among the old tax returns and Tetris tournament brackets, came across a document in which I laid out my favorite leadership quote back in 2010.
Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. Because it's only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential. Barack Obama, 2006
It was a nice reminder, timed even better with the news that my father received an award for his distinguished service at the Environmental Protection Agency. Both of my parents devoted their lives to public service, whether it was fighting for the future of our planet or protecting special need students in inner city schools.
In today's era in which avarice, myopia, and ignorance are principal traits of the most powerful people in the world, I go back to that Obama quote and think of the heroic contribution of my parents and so many others in public service. It's a reminder to be better, think beyond myself, and to serve our society.
